Scientist walking through lab

Who We Are

Wasatch BioLabs (WBL) is an independent biotechnology company with a disruptive approach to diagnostics. We are an R&D and Oxford Nanopore Technologies-certified laboratory that offers DNA and RNA sequencing services to researchers and clinical service providers. WBL offers both standard Oxford Nanopore assay-based sequencing services as well as proprietary WBL targeted sequencing services that expand the capabilities of the nanopore platform.

Nanopore Sequencing Experts

As pioneers of nanopore sequencing technology, our experts have decades of experience with bioinformatic, genetic, and epigenetic research. Oxford Nanopore sequencing offers an array of benefits over Illumina and other next generation sequencing technologies, including native strand sequencing, real-time analysis, and long to ultra-long reads.

WBL’s team of R&D scientists have developed technologies that broaden the capabilities of the Nanopore platform and enhance the clinical viability of nanopore sequencing. These improvements provide novel solutions for epigenetic researchers and clinical service providers to facilitate the translation of Oxford Nanopore technologies into clinical care. Our experts have years of hands-on experience in transitioning research designs to clinically validated tests for diagnostic use.

Research & Development Team

WBL’s R&D is led by our VP of Research and Discovery and our VP of Science and Technology with a combined 30+ years of experience with Illumina, Oxford Nanopore, and other DNA sequencing technologies.

Tim Jenkins, PhD

VP of Research and Discovery | Board Member | Co-Founder

Tim, an Associate Professor of Cell Biology and Physiology at BYU, leverages the power of epigenetics as a clinically actionable diagnostics tool. His work extends to include common and severe diseases, male fertility, Alzheimer’s, cancer, and forensics. In his lab, Tim discovers potential applications and identifies novel bench top and bioinformatic approaches to accomplish his aims.

Dr. Jonathon Hill, PhD

VP of Science and Technology | Board Member | Co-Founder

Jonathon, an Associate Professor of Cell Biology and Physiology at BYU, develops innovative genomic and bioinformatic methods for gene expression analysis and variant detection. He studies the molecular genetics of congenital heart defects in his lab. He is a Fulbright Scholar and a BYU Early-Career Teaching Award recipient, having received his MS in Molecular Biology from the University of Colorado Health Science Center and a PhD in Genetics and Developmental Biology from Columbia University.

Clinical Team

WBL’s clinical services are overseen by a High Complexity Laboratory Director (HCLD) and a Director of Compliance with a combined 40+ years of experience in CLIA and CAP accredited laboratory sciences. Our experienced clinical laboratory professionals ensure regulatory compliance of WBL’s operations and developing tests.

Benjamin R. Emery, M.Phil., T.S.

Director of Compliance | Co-Founder

Ben is a seasoned healthcare director with over 25 years of experience in CLIA and CAP accredited laboratory sciences and clinical infertility treatment. He has extensive expertise as an andrologist, embryologist, and in optimizing workflows to coordinate clinical care. Ben’s contributions to numerous research studies and clinical trials have resulted in over 40 peer-reviewed articles, scientific abstracts, presentations at meeting symposia, and book chapters that emphasize the importance of precision and accuracy in laboratory developed tests.

Ki Aston, PhD, HCLD

Lab Director | Board Member | Co-Founder

Ki Aston, an Associate Professor in the School of Medicine at the University of Utah and in Austin, Texas, completed his PhD in somatic cell nuclear transfer and nuclear reprogramming at Utah State University in 2007. He is board certified as a High Complexity Lab Director and serves as director of reproductive labs at both universities.
